The film focuses on the iconic star’s four-year love affair with photographer David Bailey. The part is Karen's first leading role since her debut in the 2010 series of Doctor Who as the Time Lord’s companion Amy Pond.
Aneurin Barnard (represented by Ken McReddie Associates) who starred in the original London cast of musical Spring Awakening and last year filmed Ironclad and Hunky Dory. He recently wrapped on Elfie Hopkins and the Gammons and is to star in Iain Softley's Trap for Cinderella, also filming this year.
Although predominantly set in 1962 and exploring the story of how Bailey and Shrimpton first met the drama also reveals how a young, visionary photographer refused to conform. He insisted on using the unconventional model Jean Shrimpton on an important photo shoot for British Vogue and, over the course of a freezing week in Manhattan, threw out the rule book and made startling, original photographs.
We’ll Take Manhattan is the story of that wild week, of Bailey and Jean’s love affair, and of how two young people accidentally changed the world forever.
Speaking about playing the model, now 68, Karen said: ‘Jean Shrimpton is an icon of the Sixties and I am so excited to be playing somebody who had such a lasting impact on the fashion world. I can’t wait to take on the challenge of bringing Jean and Bailey’s fascinating love story to life.’
Executive producer Claire Parker, of production company Kudos, said: ‘In Jean, Bailey found someone that he and his camera fell in love with.
‘We’ll Take Manhattan captures the essence of their dynamic affair and how they unwittingly changed the face of a decade.’
The film, to be screened later this year, follows the success of BBC4’s previous dramatisations of the lives of celebrity subjects including Enid Blyton, Gracie Fields, Hattie Jacques, Frankie Howerd and Tony Hancock.

Greg McHugh (represented by Conway Van Gelder) stars as the socially awkward and know-it-all Howard. Born and bred in Edinburgh, Greg studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow before making his debut on the comedy circuit in January 2002.
Zawe Ashton, from Stoke Newington, stars as the straight talking, hard-living Vod. Six-foot tall Zawe started acting as a child when she attended the Anna Sher Theatre School in London - she spent her school years rushing off to appear in TV shows such as Jackanory and Desmond's, which gave her a strong sense of independence. "Sometimes I wouldn't even tell my parents I'd got a role," she says. "I got into the swing of dealing with it quite quickly." Zawe then went on to study acting at Manchester Metropolitan University, and is also now a poet and playwright. She played Jessica in an episode of Misfits last year.
Charlotte Ritchie (represented by CAM) joins the cast as Oregon "desperate to be cool and terrified of being boring." Charlotte is a member of classical girl-group All Angels. ‘I am delighted to be able to announce our exciting cast of the best of today's talent for a brand-new comedy drama series for Channel 4. Sam and Jesse are bringing their customary incisive comedy to the drama output, and the result is a hilarious and painfully truthful series about being a student.', said C4 Head of Drama, Camilla Campbell.
Once complete, the 8 x 45 minutes series will air in a post-watershed slot towards the end of the year.

The series will tell the story of Paul (played by Coronation Street and River City actor Iain De Caestecker), a young man who suffers from terrifying apocalyptic dreams. Dreams that neither his best friend Mac (Daniel Kaluuya) nor his therapist can help him understand and provide answers as to their meaning. The dreams however are the least of Paul’s problems. As the series begins he is starting to see the spirits of the dead all around him. These spirits, or Fades as they are known in the series lore, are all around us, not able to be touched or smelt and as such are therefore invisible to all humanity. All humanity it seems, except Paul.
Lily Loveless is also in the cast, starring as Anna, Paul's twin sister, fierce and uncompromising who finds being related to someone like Paul rather annoying.
And another Skins star, Joe Dempsie (currently to be seen in HBO's Game of Thrones) plays John.
The Fades has been commissioned by the BBC initially for one season consisting of 6 episodes to be shown in September 2011, time and date still to be announced.

The Vivaldi screenplay is based on the true story of how the headstrong genius and priest Antonio Vivaldi turned a talented, but traumatised group of girls - the illegimate daughters of courtesans – into a world-class orchestra which played the great concert halls of Venice and, ultimately, for the Pope. Vivaldi is exiled and separated from his beloved girls when his maverick ways arouse the suspicion of the powerful and scheming Venetian society. But, on learning of the nature of the dark plot against them, the composer does all in his power to rescue his pupils, his career and the very integrity of the city of Venice.
A rival Vivaldi biopic, to be directed by Patricia Riggen, is also in the works. It focuses on the composer’s struggle between his devotion to his music and priestly vows and to the woman he loved. Jessica Biel, Ben Kingsley, Luke Evans and violin supremo David Garrett have been named as possible cast members for Riggen’s take on the musical genius who was also a Catholic priest. A date for the start of principle photography has not yet been set.
