Based on the novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Half of a Yellow Sun recreates a seminal moment in modern African history - Biafra's impassioned struggle to establish an independent republic in Nigeria, and the chilling violence that followed.
The story weaves together the lives of characters swept up in the turbulence of the decade. John will play Ugwu, a houseboy employed by a university professor (Ejiofor) full of revolutionary zeal. Olanna ( Newton) is the professor's beautiful mistress, who has abandoned her life of privilege in Lagos for a dusty university town and the charisma of her new lover. And Richard (Dominic Cooper) is a shy young Englishman in thrall to Olanna's twin sister, an enigmatic figure who refuses to belong to anyone. As Nigerian troops advance and they must run for their lives, their ideals are severely tested, as are their loyalties to one another.
20 year old Boyega, who is represented in the UK by Identity Agency, signed with US agency CAA shortly after making his screen debut as teenage hero Moses in Joe Cornish's alien invasion hit film Attack the Block. He recently played the lead role in Spike Lee's HBO pilot Da Brick, which sadly wasn't picked up for a series, and he has just been seen in the BBC3 docu-drama My Murder.
According to Variety, Boyega is also in negotiations to star in the indie sci-fi pic Creeping Zero which will shoot this autumn.
