But it seems that Karen is concealing deeper, darker secrets than even Rex realises. If he wasn’t guilty of murder, then who was? First look at Doctor Who Christmas special 2012

This year’s movie-scale Doctor Who Christmas special will be called The Snowmen, and the episode will introduce the new companion, a new look for the Doctor and a new monster that will have families shivering behind their sofas.

Starring Matt Smith as the Doctor, and introducing Jenna-Louise Coleman, who was announced as the new companion back in March, as Clara, The Snowmen will follow their adventures as they embark on a mission to save Christmas from the villainous Doctor Simeon (Richard E Grant) and his army of icy snowmen.

Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, said: “The Doctor at Christmas is one of my favourite things - but this year it's different. He's lost Amy and Rory to the Weeping Angels, and he's not in a good place: in fact, he's Scrooge. He's withdrawn from the world and no longer cares what happens to it. So when all of humanity hangs in the balance, can anyone persuade a tired and heartbroken Doctor that it's time to return to the good fight? Enter Jenna-Louise Coleman...”

Doctor Who will return to BBC One in December for the Christmas special, with a further eight epic episodes in spring next year.

Katie Morag comes to CBeebies

The adventures of Katie Morag McColl are to be made into a series of 26 x14 minute live action dramas for CBeebies

Katie Morag, which will be produced by the Scottish indie Move On Up, is based on the hugely popular series of books created by author and illustrator Mairi Hedderwick.

Katie Morag is a small red-headed girl who lives with her family on the magical Scottish Island of Struay. Although she lives in a unique setting, her stories portray some of the enduring themes of childhood.

Stories of jealousy, bravery and rivalry, peopled by an annoying little brother, busy shopkeeper parents, a perfectly perfect best friend and a couple of grandmothers who between them know everything about everything. Katie Morag is a feisty character who has been known to get herself into scrapes but who generally emerges from them (usually with some assistance from one or other of her Grandmothers) in a funny and endearing way.

Mairi Hedderwick said: “It is high time that that I let go of Katie Morag. I will be intrigued to watch her transformation into the medium of live action television because Katie Morag is a very real child in a very real environment; the mailbags of teachers' and children's letters from all over reassure me on this.”

Katie Morag will be shot on location in the Scottish Highlands with the stories told from a child’s perspective. Against a backdrop of the remote and beautiful Hebridean Islands, the stories will celebrate the intrinsic sense of community, the preciousness of the environment and the universal tensions and joys of family life.

The 26-episode live-action series is due to be filmed in Lewis next year.

New E4 sitcom Drifters announced

Lydia Rose Bewley and Jessica Knappett
The team behind The Inbetweeners is launching a new E4 sitcom this time about three twenty-something young women.

The show, called Drifters, features three of the stars of the spin-off film - Lydia Rose Bewley (represented  by Curtis Brown) and Jessica Knappett, who played clubbers Jane and Lisa, and Lauren O'Rourke, who played Neil's girlfriend.

The three will play three twenty-something young women Meg (Jessica Knappett), Bunny (Lydia Rose Bewley) and Laura (Lauren O'Rourke), experiencing their first slice of the real world post-University - making terrible decisions, but having a brilliant time doing it.

For the ‘Drifter' girls it's time to start asking some serious questions: What do they do now? Who are they going to be? And is it ok to shag someone with a sweat problem if you haven't had sex in twelve months?

Not fully paid up career women, they take on a series of menial jobs in their home town of Leeds that allow them to cling to the last vestiges of girlhood - that stage where everything is terrifying and exciting in equal measure. It's all about the fear that comes with knowing you should take more responsibility and the excitement that comes with knowing you still don't really have any at all.

Bob Mortimer will star as Meg's father Frank with the cast also including Nick Mohammed and Dylan Edwards.

As well as starring in it, Drifters has been written by Jessica Knappett (represented by United Agents) who studied Drama and English at The University of Manchester.

Iain Morris, one of the creators of The Inbetweeners, is executive producer on Drifters.

He said: "We're lucky and delighted to be involved with Jess's new sitcom. "We knew from our time working with her while shooting The Inbetweeners movie that she was hysterically funny, not least because she created the production's unofficial drinking den, Bar Knappett, in her hotel room."

Channel 4's comedy commissioning editor, Fiona McDermott, said: "Drifters promises to be a really funny sitcom about really funny girls. It's that simple. Jess is a fab talent and it's great to be working with her."

The series is being produced by produced by Bwark Productions, a Zodiak Media Company, and the company behind E4's multi-award winning series and film, The Inbetweeners.
