The A Word

Six year old newcomer Max Vento from West Yorkshire stars in a new BBC drama series The A Word which has just started filming in the Lake District.

Max (represented by WYSPA) plays the youngest son of the Hughes family, whose diagnosis of autism affects the whole family. He stars alongside Lee Ingleby and Morven Christie as his parents, and Christopher Eccleston, Greg McHugh and Vinette Robinson.

Fellow newcomer 19 year old Molly Wright (represented by WGM Talent) from Manchester plays his teenage sister.

The family realises that if their son is ever going to communicate, they are going to have to learn how to communicate themselves. It’s a funny and thought-provoking series about parenthood and childhood, written by BAFTA-winning writer Peter Bowker, who said of the project:

“We have the opportunity here to make something funny, tough, realistic and inventive about contemporary family life and autism. In a society where imperfection increasingly comes with blame attached, it seems timely to look at how autism is regarded both within a family and the wider community – and to give some insight into how that experience might be for the child on the autism spectrum. It’s a drama full of ideas – about parenthood, about disability, about communication, about community – and will emphatically engage an audience whatever their experience of the subject.”

Polly Hill, BBC Controller of Drama, said: "The A Word tackles parts of life that aren't always easy and Peter has drawn on the absolute highs, lows and challenges so many families face when a child is different to other children, in a beautiful way. With Peter’s award-winning track record and history of drama tackling tough subjects, The A Word is set to be a rollercoaster of a series which is ultimately an uplifting, honest and human drama for BBC One.”

The series is based on a Keshet International and July August Productions’ series and drama format which was written and created by Keren Margalit, who will be an executive producer on the UK series.

Filming on the six-part drama will continue in the Lake District and also at Manchester’s Space Project until early 2016 and is expected to air in late Spring 2016.

The Secret Life of Boys

The Secret Life Of Boys is a brand new interactive comedy drama which launches on the CBBC website and CBBC channel this November.

In the series 11 year old Ginger flies from Australia to the UK to spend the summer with four cousins she's never met before - how will she manage in a foreign country, with a new family?

Melbourne-based Erica Brown (represented by Gilchrist Managment in Australia) flew to Ireland to film the lead role of Ginger Boxwell, marking her TV drama debut.

Her cousins are played by 19 year old Neil Reynolds, who has previously appeared in comedy series The T-Boy Show.

15 year old Reece Buttery (represented by A&J Management), who starred in BBC Christmas drama Gangsta Granny, and plays Mo in CBBC's The Dumping Ground, plays Robbie.

12 year old Gene Gurie (represented by The Young Actors Theatre) plays Ethan in his first TV role.

And Joel Guy joins the cast as the youngest member of the family, Chris in his TV debut.

Arriving from Adelaide to a house full of boys, what Ginger doesn't realise is that Matt, Robbie, Ethan and Chris are just as nervous about it as she is. Like every boy, these boys have their share of secrets. Not only are they keeping them from Ginger and their parents, but also from each other! The boys discover that Ginger also has something she’s hiding. And it’s big. The game is afoot and they work tirelessly to uncover Ginger’s secret, all the while trying to protect their own.

The unique interactive format allows viewers to discover additional content, including character insights and hidden secrets, which will help piece together Ginger’s big secret; and extra punchlines which allow the user to re-live gags in new ways.

Aunt Corey is played by Elizabeth Bower and Uncle Bob by Grant Burgin.

The Secret Life of Boys is a Zodiak Kids Studio production for CBBC in the UK and ABC in Australia. It was written and created by Anthony Q Farrell, and produced and directed by Beryl Richards.

The episodes will start being released online (bbc.co.uk/cbbc) from Monday 2 November, they will then be wrapped up as a TV omnibus edition on CBBC on Saturdays, starting from the 7 November. The series will air on ABC3 in Australia.

They have been a number of successful previous CBBC/international co-commissions:
Dead Gorgeous where British actress Poppy Lee Friar flew to Australia to film the 13-episode series, and Paradise Cafe, where British actors Holly Bodimeade and Pax Baldwin travelled to New Zealand and Rarotonga to film two series of the island-set comedy drama.
